Geographical Indications (GI)
Geographical Indications (GI) are distinctive signs used on products that originate from a specific geographical location and possess qualities, characteristics, or a reputation inherently linked to that origin. These attributes may arise from natural factors such as climate, soil, or topography, as well as human factors like traditional knowledge, craftsmanship, or unique production techniques passed down through generations.
A GI identifies a product as coming from a particular place—ranging from a village or town to a larger region or an entire country—where its distinctive qualities are cultivated and preserved. It is essential that the product’s value and uniqueness stem from this specific place of origin.
In India, GI grant an exclusive right to communities or groups involved in the creation of such products, ensuring that the benefits of registration are collectively enjoyed. Over the years, numerous Indian products have secured GI recognition, including Chanderi Sarees, Kullu Shawls, and Coimbatore Wet Grinders. Given India’s rich diversity of traditional crafts and indigenous knowledge, GI registration continues to play a vital role in promoting sustainable livelihoods for tribal groups, artisans, and local communities.
