Layout Design for Integrated Circuits
A Semiconductor Integrated Circuit (SIC) is defined as a product with transistors and other circuitry elements inseparably formed on/in a semiconductor or insulating material, designed to perform an electronic function.
The Semiconductor Integrated Circuits Layout-Design (SICLD) Act, 2000 provides an Intellectual Property Right (IPR) system to protect the topography or layout-designs of these chips. This protection is vital as it fosters innovation and encourages massive investment in the complex semiconductor industry. This framework grants the registered proprietor the exclusive right to commercially exploit and seek relief against any infringement.
Registration is valid for 10 years from the date of filing or first commercial exploitation (whichever is earlier). The administrative body overseeing the registration and other matters is the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).
